I was wrong. I have to give the writing staff credit for the inclusion of the fountain pen and its supposed implication of Burke. Roger's adamant insistence on Vicky keeping the pen secret is of crucial importance here because of revelations from Carolyn. She tells Vicky of a dinner engagement she had and will be having with Burke Devlin. The one in Bangor when Burke gave her a special present...the fountain pen, one of only six, for which Roger took from her because of who gave it to Carolyn. Vicky's suspicions of Burke go away and a new suspect emerges to her: Roger Collins. Carolyn is asked on a date with Burke at the Blue Whale, but her jovial enthusiasm of something in the works is a ruse: Burke is using her because his attempt to hire away Elizabeth's fishing fleet, cannery workers was unsuccessful. He learns here that money doesn't necessarily buy people, that loyalty does matter. While I personally admire their decision to remain with the Collins Port business, Carolyn's naivete and vulnerability could be used against her just so he can get some revenge on the family.
Ms. Johnson meets with Burke at his inn room to discuss the moan that frightened her, proclaiming Collinwood haunted. Burke is able to convince her that it was perhaps just someone in the house, the walls talking to her instead of a boogeyman. Johnson tells him that David suspects them of being in cahoots. He learns of Vicky's feelings about him (that is at that point in time when Johnson was in the room dusting, listening in to her conversation with Carolyn), bewildered at why she has had a sudden change of heart regarding him.
Carolyn is just giddy with excitement, telling Vicky almost immediately after the invitation at the Blue Whale. She has abandoned Joe. Joe has perhaps moved on to Maggie (wise choice). Now Carolyn may be collateral damage in a war between the Collins and Burke. Burke thought it would be easier to defeat Elizabeth, but he's already starting to see that will not be the case.
