Burke's Expectations of Laura; Laura's Brief Interrogation

Episode dated 1-4-67

The whole point of Laura at the onset is to establish her as an enigma. She’s purposely mysterious and her behavior is aloof and obviously she conceals a bit from all around her. Laura wants David; Roger doesn’t. Elizabeth does. A dead body is seemingly unrecognizable, and it’ll take a bit of forensics (as Sheriff Patterson mentions, “they’re getting a bit good at that now…”) to give it an identity. That bit of business alone raises a lot of uneasy questions about Laura herself. Was she the cause of the dead body? Why was the body burnt alive? Why was it in Laura’s apartment specifically? When Sheriff Patterson gives Laura a “pleasant interrogation”, as Roger looks on in bemused interest, she seems to know nothing except her whereabouts prior to arriving at Collins Port, the travel spots between Phoenix and her present location. With a burnt apartment, Roger does raise the question of where she’ll make residence with David.

Laura has plans, but in this episode itself she isn’t about to reveal too much. This is a soap, remember? So Roger tells her he shall return to discuss Burke Devlin with her, and the next bit of storyline focuses on Burke’s seduction of Carolyn, only too pleased to oblige him with kissy embraces and warm closeness. Being that Dark Shadows is a Gothic soap—with emphasis on soap—there has to be some juicy character entanglements. After holding and kissing the hand of Carolyn, drawing on her vulnerability, eventually leaving because Roger stormed in with demands for him to go, Burke does so, taking Laura’s suitcase to her. Oh, Burke hasn’t left Carolyn five minutes, and into a conversation with Laura he’s trying to make out with her. It’s funny stuff. Especially funny when Roger shows up at the cottage with a shotgun pointed at Burke!

Early Exit

Burke interrupts what could have been a decent dinner between Maggie, her father, and Vicky, and he's sore, agenda-driven, and pointed in defending himself, while also demanding answers...answers Sam is willing to flee to protect. Sam's only link to Burke at all, besides Roger himself, is the letter he wrote to Maggie. He escapes out the back door while the others were in the living room and heads to Collins Port Inn where the letter is kept but the owner will not give it over to him. The letter is Maggie's and she will have to give permission before Sam can get his hands on it. Malloy's death looms large and will not go away--especially as long as Burke steamrolls throughout Collins Port, pissed off and unrestrained. He wants to know Sam's connection to the wrongful conviction and isn't about to just forget his presence at the meeting that night. Maggie just cannot believe that her father had anything at all to do with Malloy's death; Sam and Malloy were fr...

Keeping Quiet

Carolyn is all bent out of shape when she gets the phone call from Sheriff Patterson confirming the body found being Bill Malloy. Elizabeth wanted to tell her but Carolyn has a way of diverting a serious matter through evasion (in this case, not purposely). Carolyn gets all fatalistic and existential, how life is precious and could be taken away at any moment. A mourning period will now begin for Malloy, what he meant to those around him. At the Blue Whale, Sam is drinking heavily--no surprise--and Roger wants his assurance that the secret regarding Burke's manslaughter charge remain hidden. Both parties deny having anything to do with Malloy's demise but Sam is acting awfully strangely, especially when the topic of autopsy is brought up. Vickie plans to have dinner with Maggie and Sam, and is curious if Roger's reasons for her not meeting them might have something to do with her past. Vickie's past has been rather buried lately, with a few episodes finding a little roo...

A Dilemma

This isn't the name of Episode 62 but an actual problem I have. Currently two discs of Dark Shadows Collection 3 are not available on netflix to me so I will have to, seeing as I have not other way to avoid this, no alternative, skip certain episodes. I hate this as I want to stay in order and not have to miss huge gaps of story and character development. The only other choice I have is to buy the entire expensive set, and I just can't afford it. So, if you one or two people who have happened through my blog at some point, I want to apologize in advance.
